Popis: Analysis of near-isogenic lines carrying Rht1, Rht2 or Rht3 in the genetic background of spring and winter wheat varieties showed that these dwarfing genes have no effects on the number of organs, or on the timing of developmental events. The characters studied included leaf and spikelet primordium initiation, leaf emergence and stem internode extension. The conclusion is reached that the genes do not directly affect developmental events, and that their effects on grain numbers and yield must be the result of an altered pattern of growth.
