Popis: The nondestructive detection of rot in spruce during the harvesting process is essential for wood classification and therefore a sustainable, resource- and cost-efficient material processing. In this work the focus is set on a tomographic approach with ultra-wideband radar for rot detection in trunks. Regarding to this the dielectric material properties have been determined to model wave propagation in a trunk section. Simulations with the measured permittivities are showing different wave propagation path and runtime differences for direct and circumferential waves as well as good and rotten heartwood. An ultra-wideband radar setup for tomographic measurements is presented. The setup measures the propagation time through a trunk section along different direct propagation path. Out of this, a permittivity tomogram across the tree section is determined. The tomograms for good and rotten trunk sections are showing measureable differences and are promising for a classification of the rot especially if the system is combined with measurements of elastic waves.
