Popis: Two relatively long, flexible bis(pyridine)-type linking ligands, {( m -py) CH 2 NH C 6 H 10 NH CH 2 ( m -py) [ m = 3 ( L 1′ ) or 4 ( L 2′ )]}, were prepared from their parent diimine species [( n -py) CH N C 6 H 10 N CH ( n -py) [ n = 3 ( L 1 ) or 4 ( L 2 )]} by reduction with sodium borohydride. Under solvothermal conditions, ligands L 1 and L 2 reacted with Co(NO 3 ) 2 ·6H 2 O in methanol–benzene to give a 1-D stair-like polymer [Co( L 1 ) 1.5 (NO 3 ) 2 ] and a 2-D α-arsenic-type polymer [Co( L 2 ) 1.5 (NO 3 ) 2 ], respectively. On the other hand, under layer-diffusion conditions, the reduced ligands L 1′ and L 2′ combined with the same cobalt species in the same mixed solvents to form a 1-D polymer of double layers of loops [Co( L 1′ H 2 ) 2 (NO 3 )](NO 3 ) 5 (CH 3 OH) and a 1-D chain polymer [Co( L 2′ H 2 )( η 1 -NO 3 ) 2 (OCH 3 ) 2 ], respectively.
