A model, based on the social and territorial behaviour of lions, is used to simulate localized lion culling operations in a large game park. The results are compared with culling experiments performed in the Central District of the Kruger National Park, South Africa. The model is used to demonstrate the importance of the social status of the lions actually culled, the differences between short-term and long-term culling programmes, and the effect of localized culling on the total sorrounding population. A measure of culling efficiency is defined. |
