Computational Analysis of Air-to-Air Refueling

Popis: Results from a flight test of a Learjet flying behind a KC-135R simulating aerial refueling are presented. During an aerial refueling operation, the downwash due to the tanker increases the thrust required by the receiver to maintain position. This downwash angle was determined from flight data by comparing angle of attack and pitch attitude measurements in level flight with the receiver behind the tanker. The measured angle differed significantly from pre-flight estimates made from simple trailing vortex models. Comparisons are made with computations from the CFD code AVUS. Nomenclature
