In this paper we present a new technique that allows to reconstruct a series of C-arm x-ray images into a volume within a few seconds instead of minutes. The main innovation is a new architecture that maps this algorithm into FPGA based hardware. This architecture overcomes the typical memory bandwidth limitation in the Feldkamp reconstruction by a sophisticated re-usage of voxel data and projection pixels. It achieves a parallelization speedup that is independent of the available bandwidth; it only depends on the chip-internal amount of resources. We have implemented the architecture into a Xilinx XCV400-4 with one pipeline running and process one projection of size 512×512 within 1 second for a 2563 volume. A current implementation on a Virtex II XC2V3000 will have 16 parallel pipelines and thus processes 16 projections per second. For assumed 80 projections the system thus requires 5 seconds. |
