This study aims to investigate whether noradrenergic projects from the LC to the IL are required for the extinction enhancement found in VNS-paired extinction. To isolate the pathway, we will use an immunotoxin to selectively lesion noradrenergic projections to the IL. We will then test to see if the effects of VNS persist in light of this immunotoxin lesioning. Given that VNS leads to increases in norepinephrine in the prefrontal cortex, we postulate that blocking the neuromodulators presence in that brain region will lead to decreased enhanced extinction effects normally brought by VNS. |
