Introduction: Information available on the clinical features and outcomes of pneumonia in diabetic patients is limited. The objective of the present study was to assess whether diabetes as comorbidity in pneumonia affects the clinical course and outcomes of the disease. Methods: A prospective, observational study in 3 respiratory clinics of Sotiria hospital in Athens, between 2011-2014. The medical records of hospitalized patients with CAP having diabetes mellitus were identified and we compare with the rest of the patients. Results: Of the 414 pneumonia patients evaluated, 92(22%) had diabetes mellitus. Patients with diabetes mellitus were older (71 ±10 vs. 61 ±19 years old) had more often cardiac failure [50(54%) vs. 96(30%)] and receiving frequently statins [29(56%) vs. 45(24%), p Conclusions: Although the presentation of CAP in diabetics is more severe than the others patients with CAP, with acute renal failure and uremia; the evolution of the disease is similar and so the mortality. |
