Background: Advances in internet and communication technology are bringing new developments in behavioral health interventions like motivational interviewing (MI). Both guided (i.e., with clinician support) and unguided forms have been tested but the latter is especially attractive because of their affordability and accessibility. For MI specifically, several unguided internet-based MI (iMI) trials have been conducted. However, the MI skills used in such trials, the internet elements contained in them, or the populations who may benefit from unguided iMI are unclear. Objectives: To provide a scoping review of unguided iMI to better understand how and with whom these internet-based therapies are applied. Specifically, the present study will assess unguided iMI in the areas of (1) study characteristics, (2) specific MI skills applied, and (3) use of key internet elements used. Methods and Synthesis: We will include clinical trials that applied unguided internet-based Motivational Interviewing with people presenting in any healthcare facility for any mental or physical condition. We will accept any comparison and any outcome. We will search studies in Cochrane CENTRAL, Ovid MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, ProQuest, and Clinicaltrials.gov from January 1, 2003, to January 1, 2023. We will narratively synthesize data by summarizing study characteristics, key internet elements for interventions, and internet-based Motivational Interviewing skill application components. |
