Popis: The structural, nanomechanical and corrosion properties of TiC and TiN thin films prepared by pulsed dc sputtering under similar processing conditions were investigated. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy techniques were used to investigate the phase formation, surface morphology, and surface roughness of the films, respectively. Nanoindentation technique revealed that the TiC films had superior indentation hardness and Young’s modulus of 18.61GPa, and 196.57 GPa, respectively than that of the TiN films. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements carried out in natural seawater and 3.5% NaCl solution indicated that TiC coating with low surface roughness has shown a superior passivation and better corrosion protection for the M−50 steel substrate than that of TiN coatings.
