The increase in the penetration of small- and utility-scale variable renewable energy across Australia’s National Electricity Market has increased the value to those supply- and demand-side resources that are flexible and dispatchable. On the demand side, digitalization, automation, the Internet of Things, and other technological advances are creating an increasing number of “prosumers” that are capable of responding to real-time price signals. This increasing dynamism in energy demand and supply, for both small- and large-scale customers, will be increasingly valuable and needed if the trilemma of lower prices, high reliability and system security, and emissions reductions is to be solved. |
