Popis: The [CuCl(C6H9N3O3)2·H2O]2Cl2 binuclear complex of copper(II) has been prepared by the reaction of cupric chloride with metronidazole and has been investigated by X-ray diffraction and EPR techniques to elucidate its low-dimensional behaviour. The crystal is monoclinic, space group P21/c with a = 14.686(1), b = 10.275(1), c = 13.878(1) A and β = 105.82(1)°. The salt forms a typical zero-dimensional system of Cu2+ pairs connected by double bridging chlorine atoms with a Cu-Cu distance of 3.42 A. The hydroxyl groups of metronidazole and water molecules from adjacent pairs form a network of hydrogen bonds stabilising the lattice. The EPR spectra of the salt have been recorded at 9.4 GHz at room temperature. Only one exchange-narrowed line has been observed for the two magnetically inequivalent copper ions in the lattice. The results confirm that the magnetic system is zero-dimensional.
