Popis: Liveweight losses of steers changed from winter rations of hay or silage to pasture averaged 6 to 10% over four successive seasons. All groups lost weight, the greatest losses occurring during the first 4 days. In two years out of four, hay-fed steers lost less weight than silage-fed animals. However, there was no significant difference in weight 10 days postpasture. Supplemental hay feeding for 5 days postpasture did not prevent losses. Neither hay nor silage of the type fed will acclimatize cattle to pasture.
