High penetration wind integrated into bulk power systems challenges the power system operation. To maximize wind energy production, hybrid wind systems combining wind farms with compressed air energy storage (CAES) are designed and controlled in this paper. An approach for designing hybrid wind systems is presented. A multi-level dispatch and control strategy are developed to utilize the storage capacity with maximum benefits by managing the state-of-charge of the storage device. A novel storage predictive controller is designed to predict SOC saturation, control storage power output, and avoid control capability loss of storage. A numerical case study demonstrated that the proposed approach is effective to reduce variability of wind-CAES hybrid system power generation. |
