Carbinol- 14 C-noradrenalin and 2- 14 C-dopamine were injected into immature American cockroaches while in the process of shedding the old cuticle (ecdysis). In both cases, cuticles removed 8 hr later was found to have taken up the injected label. Prior extraction of the ground cuticles with 0.1 N HCl in methanol failed to remove the radioactive compound which suggests that the label becomes covalently linked within the cuticle matrix. Analysis of the blood of injected cockroaches at intervals after injection showed that both dopamine and noradrenalin undergo N-acetylation and are subsequently converted to an unidentified conjugate. In addition, two carbon side chain phenolic acids and their corresponding conjugates are found. It is postulated that the acidic and the N-acetylated metabolites of dopamine and nor adrenalin can be transported to the epidermis as protected conjugates. |
