Popis: The presumed benefits and risks of estrogen treatment in postmenopausal women are reviewed. Most of the data used were from retrospective studies and subject to the usual limitations of such studies. Large prospective clinical trials are needed to confirm or refute these initial findings. Estrogen treatment brings about the following benefits: 1) relief of vasomotor instability symptoms; 2) amelioration or prevention of urogenital epithelium atrophy; and 3) reduction during short-term treatment of accelerated bone resorption. There is no proof of the benefit of estrogen for emotional disturbance in postmenopausal women. Estrogen therapy increases the risk of: 1) endometrial cancer 2) hypertension and 3) gallbladder disease. Estrogen does not affect coronary heart disease or stroke risk breast cancer risk or thromboembolic disease risk. It is concluded that asymptomatic postmenopausal women should not receive estrogen treatment. Women with debilitating vasomotor symptoms could receive low-dosage estrogen treatment for a short period of time.
