Vanadium is a heavy metal with wide-ranging industrial use. It is also a contaminant in fossil fuels and, it is thus, released into the environment in areas of gas flaring, oil spills, and from automobile exhaust in densely populated cities. Occupational and environmental exposure to vanadium is a health concern and, there have been several studies and reports on vanadium toxicity in various organ systems, including the central nervous system. Our present knowledge of the neurotoxicity of vanadium has been made possible from studies in humans and animal models. This chapter is a review of the insights gained from the different model systems and the roles of future model organisms in answering the lingering questions concerning the mechanisms of vanadium neurotoxicity. |
