Popis: A brief history of coding approaches employed in magnetic recording disk drives is first reviewed. This is followed by a simple example of using the most widely used Reed-Solomon codes to illustrate the concepts and terminology frequently used in disk drives. Important considerations in selecting appropriate decoding algorithm are explained. Implementation issues are discussed. Synchronization techniques, code performance based on error rate computation, interleaving of code block within a recording sector, and error-detecting code issues are also addressed. Finally, coding approaches for magnetic tape drives and RAID systems are discussed. Keywords: coding; magnetic recording channels; Reed-Solomon codes; performance; error rate definitions; redundant array of independent disks (RAID); codes; interleaving; noninterleaving
