Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of the importance of traffic control, basic traffic control hand signals, and general rules for traffic direction. Traffic duty consists of directing and supervising traffic at gates and intersections, and patrolling parking areas. Prompt compliance to hand signals is dependent on the officer's ability to use uniform, clearly defined, and understandable gestures. Improper hand signals, although highly entertaining to bystanders, cause confusion, hesitation, and lead to violations and accidents. The whistle is a means of communication rather than a musical instrument. When properly used, it attracts the attention of motorists and pedestrians, and facilitates compliance with hand signals; when improperly used, it becomes a meaningless distraction that adds to the confusion. Some responsibilities must be fulfilled for effective traffic control, such as control and assist turning vehicles, protect pedestrians, assist emergency vehicles, and assist people seeking information. General rules for traffic direction are selecting the best suitable position, use uniform signals and gestures, keep stragglers alert, and be cheerful but firm. |
