Popis: Evolution of pathogenic bacteria results from the acquisition of mobile genetic elements. Furthermore, loss of genetic information by deletion and the acquisition of nonsense mutations also contribute to genetic diversification. Mobile or mobilizable genetic elements encoding bacterial protein toxins promote horizontal gene transfer of toxin determinants. The genetic organization of mobile genetic elements carrying bacterial protein toxin genes mirrors the importance of recombination, gene acquisition- and loss of function events for continuous evolution and the generation of new protein toxin variants.
