Introduction: Hereditary angioedema is a rare condition that can cause severe oropharyngeal and laryngo-tracheal swelling. Dental and maxillofacial surgeons should be aware that the swelling can be stimulated by the trauma of simple oral and dental extractions resulting in life-threatening airway compromise; especially in a pediatric population. Case Report: We discuss a case of a 6-year-old male child with brittle hereditary angioedema who required the extraction of multiple carious deciduous teeth. Conclusion: We describe our management from initial assessment to discharge; utilizing a patient-centered, multidisciplinary, evidence-based approach to successfully manage this child in order to provide a useful resource to inform safe clinical practice when encountering children with this rare condition. |
