Popis: Although patients who undergo cardiac surgery require more transfusions than most other hospitalized patients, evidence-based practice supported by large clinical trials suggests that “less is more” for transfusion. Methods of blood conservation for cardiac surgery are being refined, and blood utilization overall is decreasing. Tolerating lower hemoglobin levels is becoming more acceptable, and laboratory-based decision-making for the “yellow products” (plasma, platelets, and cryoprecipitate) appears to reduce overall transfusion requirements. By following data-driven, evidence-based transfusion algorithms, we can reduce unnecessary transfusions along with their associated risks and costs, thus increasing the value of care provided to our patients.
