The security professional is often a part of labor relations on behalf of their employer as the individual who responds to, initially addresses, and/or documents an incident involving one or more employees, including the security professional themselves. In the private sector and sometimes in the public sector, employees belonging to a collective bargaining unit or union may take action to influence the employer. These actions range from protests to strikes. Conversely, sometimes an employer may take action to influence the bargaining unit by locking them out of a facility. Collectively, these activities are referred to as labor relations. Whether the event is a protest/picket line, strike, or lockout, the security professional must be aware of not only their responsibilities but also their potential impact on the labor relations process. |
