Four preparations of pure salivary mucoid were prepared from pooled samples of activated saliva. The nitrogen, hexosamine, fucose, “true” hexose and sialic acid contents were estimated in each sample. In addition, chromatograms were run in order to examine the monosaccharide and hexosamine constituents. Two preparations were examined by means of ultraviolet light at wavelengths from 235 to 320 mμ. The results were essentially in agreement with those of Berggard and Werner in that the preparations consisted predominantly of fucomucin, the sialic acid content being quite low. The possible role of salivary mucoid in the caries process is assessed. |
