Scoping reviews are an evidence synthesis approach that systematically chart the literature available on a topic, concept or issues, using a broad question and different sources of evidence [1, 2]. Oral medicine and oral pathology are dentistry specialties responsible for the prevention, diagnosis, and management of oral and maxillofacial diseases. The birth of these specialties is still unclear due to the paucity of well-documented historical evidence. However, it is estimated that oral medicine and oral pathology emerged in 1945 and 1948, respectively. Nonprofit scientific entities congregate professionals from related areas, such as oral medicine and oral pathology. The aim of this review is to synthesize the history of how scientific entities focused on study and dissemination of knowledge in the areas of oral medicine and oral pathology were formed, how they spread around the world and what are their main contributions to the prevention, diagnosis and management of oral conditions/diseases. |
