Popis: Since the first open-label studies demonstrating the benefit of s-blockade in heart failure were reported in Sweden in the 1970s [1–3], a number of double-blind, placebo-controlled studies involving more than 10,000 patients have confirmed the benefits of some, but not all, s-blocking agents in reducing mortality and morbidity in heart failure [4]. Specifically, three major clinical trials, the US Carvedilol Programme [5], the Metoprolol CR/XL Randomised Intervention Trial in Congestive Heart Failure (MERIT-HF) [6] and the Cardiac Insufficiency Bisoprolol Study II (CIBIS-II) [7],have demonstrated the significant mortality and morbidity benefits of carvedilol, metoprolol and bisoprolol, respectively, in heart failure.
