On the basis of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction data and substantiated by nuclear magnetic resonance measurements a crystal structure for Li5B4 is proposed. The proposed structure is rhombohedral (R3m) with a = 4.93 A and a = 90° but it is disordered in such a way that its long range symmetry is body-centered cubic ( I 4 3m ) with a = 4.93 A . Within the short range order the boron atoms (in units of 4) form planar clusters with a central atom surrounded by three others. This boron configuration has no counterpart in either metal borides or boron hydrides. The lithium atoms cluster in trigonal bipyramids (two tetrahedra sharing a common face) with five atoms at the vertices. This configuration is similar to that found in the low temperature hexagonal structure of lithium. |
