At Mn2+ concentrations in ZnS relevant for electroluminescence applications the decay of emission after pulse excitation is strongly non-exponential. At low excitation an empirical two-parameter formula fits well to it. Luminescence efficiency can be expressed as the time integral over the decay curve (the light sum) divided by the one over loss-free radiative decay, given by the radiative lifetime. The mentioned parametrizing is quite suitable to study the dependence of decay and luminescence efficiency on the Mn concentration [Mn]. This turns out to be not unique: technology of film preparation introduces a factor of 2 variation at optimum doping, and a much larger one at higher [Mn]. However this variation is exceeded by that with brightness itself, due to nonlinear cross relaxation, and with respect to efficiency by the (extra) outcoupling of light, due to scattering. |
