The engineering of a system which can provide automated feedback control of muscle relaxation is described in this paper. The system is based on a standard MS-DOS microcomputer architecture and is capable of providing automated control using different muscle relaxants. The prototype system has, to date, successfully controlled neuromuscular blockade using the muscle relaxant drugs d-tubocurarine and atracurium. A feature of the computer system is the user interface that minimizes the training required to operate the instrument. The instrument can also serve as a data logger, as it stores the patient activity on disk as well as presenting it graphically on the computer screen and on a printer. |
