A microspot electron gun employing cold cathode emission from a glow discharge is described. The gun works in soft vacuum at currents of a few milliamps and voltages up to 40 kV. Measurements on beam characteristics were made and the effect of various operating parameters investigated. The cathode emission was found to be peaked at the centre with a brightness of the order of 105 A cm-2 sterad-1. Machining trials were made on stainless steel and silica. It is concluded that this type of gun could be developed further to about a factor 10 increase in brightness. |
