Popis: | Australia is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world, bringing both opportunities and challenges. The aim of this chapter is to provide an overview of the research evidence examining influences of ethnicity and migration on health and ageing. Mostly, older people from minority ethnic backgrounds are reported to have poorer health outcomes than their Anglo-Australian counterparts. We draw heavily on our own research in this area in order to illustrate the experiences of ageing from the perspectives of older people themselves. Four areas are highlighted as important for consideration in promoting health and well-being, as well as planning a health system that is inclusive of all Australians: language and communication, health literacy, the role of family and technological advances. |
