Charcoal Quality in the Household Consumption in Brazil

| Popis: | Brazil is the largest producer of charcoal in the world, consuming all its production for internal use. Most charcoal (approximately 85%) is destined for the steel industry, for the production of pig iron and steel. Another use of great national importance is in households, which corresponded to 12% of the charcoal produced in 2016. Unlike other countries that use charcoal for heating and residential cooking, among others, the use of charcoal in Brazil is mainly for cooking, especially for barbecue, a great cultural meal in the country. One of the problems with charcoal production is the lack of regulation, in most states, on the quality of charcoal produced. Charcoal low quality may be linked to environmental, social and economic externalities, since it is directly related to an inefficient supply chain. Thus, in order to analyze this reality, this work brings an overview of the main studies on the quality of the charcoal used domestically in Brazil and the consequences of the lack of standards and controls in the supply chain of this fuel. Moreover, it shows, through a case study, the discrepancy between information contained in sold charcoal and actual production data. The results show that there are few laws on the subject in Brazil, poor supervision and low production control, resulting in low-quality charcoal used domestically.
