Popis: The lifetime of electronically excited triplet acetaldehyde has been determined in the gas phase as a function of temperature and pressure. The results provide an estimate of the rate constant for the unimolecular decomposition of triplet acetaldehyde of kg = 1010.9±0.4 exp - (9.3 ± 0.6kcalmol−1)/RT s−1. Rate data for the quenching of the triplet, State by molecular oxygen yields a value of kO2 = (3.96±0.02)xl09 Lmol−1s−l independent of temperature. Comparison of the present results with the available data from previous emission and photodecomposition studies indicates that the reaction of triplet acetaldehyde with oxygen occurs predominantly via an energy transfer pathway. It is suggested that the photo-induced atmospheric removal of acetaldehyde occurs predominantly via radical formation in a dissociative primary process.
