Crew resource management (CRM) migration outside the United States varied—it was welcomed with approval by some, punctuated with ease in adapting to the airline’s culture and operations, whereas by others it was rejected as Anglo-centric and deemed to not travel well across different cultures. This chapter will examine how CRM extended outside the United States using conversations with other cultures including the medical domain that has had significant activity in team CRM training. Similar experiences in other domain cultures such as health care, shall be discussed with a view to see parallel cultural experiences in these diverse groups. An undertaking to fully canvass CRM experiences outside the United States would have involved a comprehensive survey of global scope. Instead, to gather a cross-section of these experiences, this exploration took the form of probing questions which were sent to South American and Asian CRM developers and managers. Their personal experiences are in this chapter. All of the contributors are pilots who have several years of experience in CRM design and implementation. This chapter is best treated as a journal of “conversations” from its contributors and reflections of the author on the voyages of CRM outside the United States. We extend to our contributors our profuse thanks for building this short journal of cultural experiences on cultural issues in CRM. |
