A well-known result of RET calculations is that energy transfer cannot occur if the transition dipole moments of the donor and acceptor are disposed orthogonally with respect to each other, and at least one is also perpendicular to their mutual displacement vector. The introduction, to such a system, of a polarisable chromophore facilitates an indirect form of RET, and the theoretical results reveal in detail the dependence on the positional and orientational coordinates of the third chromophore. Representative results are secured for systems with high chromophore symmetry. The results may be used to inform the design of energy transfer systems. |
