Retrospective review of diagnostic errors in CNS intraoperative consultation often reveals that diagnosis was based on inadequate tissue sampling or subpar preparations. Therefore, the correct performance of the whole process should include proper identification of the specimen, appropriate transportation, adequate tissue sampling, careful achievement of the squash/smearing technique, and quick, but optimal, fixation and staining. In this chapter, these important topics are discussed including detailed information about the fast staining methods more often used. |
