This chapter focuses on the role of biotechnology in avocado breeding, such as micropropagation of shoots via axillary branching for fungal resistance, embryo rescue for the efficient recovery of genotypes from selected crosses, genomics and establishment of embryogenic lines from immature zygotic embryos. TMethods for transforming avocado embryogenic cultures are discussed and advances in gene cloning linked to improvements of avocado regeneration are presented. The use of currently available cryopreservation techniques for preserving selected embryogenic cell lines and avoiding the loss of embryogenic competence, which occurs with time, is also pointed out. |
