Popis: | The striking effect of adrenal cortical extracts upon the survival of the adrenalectomized animal has caught the general attention to such an extent that other phases of glandular activity pertaining to the cortex have received but little consideration. Yet I emphasized in 1927 (1) that purified extracts of the adrenal cortex which are capable of maintaining life in the adrenaleetomized animal also show remarkable effects upon the blood lipoids. Intravenous injection of the active substance is followed by a fallf both cholesterol and phosphatides of the blood. I have continued these investigations during the past six years and was able to show that this drop of lipoids can be produced not only in the rabbit, rat and dog, but also in man. Chart 1 illustrates the effect obtained with three different samples of interrenin on the blood cholesterol of the rabbit. There was an average drop of cholesterol of 14 per cent in the first group, 48.5 per cent in the second, 29 per cent in the third, and a total averag... |
