Popis: | A macroscopic model for the attenuation of small-amplitude stress waves in solids is presented. The loss mechanism described is that of solid friction which varies as the gradient of the local stress. The model is illustrated by a mass-spring system sliding on a rough surface in which the roughness of the surface increases in either direction with distance from the equilibrium position of the mass. The Q for the model is independent of frequency. Experimental evidence for the dependence of Q on surface area in silicate aggregates suggests the validity of a solid-friction model. |
