Popis: A veritable “problem child” in French hospital system, and for many years “underprivileged” in comparison with other disciplines, emergency medecine in France is undergoing major reorganization. Continuous 24 hour operation in Regional and University Hospital emergency departments (ED) has become a health care priority. Indeed, nearly 6 million patients are admitted each year in medical and surgical emergency rooms in the country, and 50% of all hospitalizations are the result of initial evaluation and treatment in the ED which serves as liaison between primary care physicians and hospital medicine. Both suitable standards of procedure and the nature of patient problems motivating emergency care “consumption” need to be specified in order to: 1. define the essential roles of the ED and the qualifications of medical and paramedical staff; 2. determine the architectural requirements for providing optimal and pleasant reception, and for responding to all types of medical and surgical emergencies; 3. evaluate the need for technical facilities (lab, radiology) in the vicinity of the ED.
