Low carbon alloy steels, one alloyed with B and Cr and other alloyed with B, Cr and Nb were made and cast into pencil ingots. These ingots were hot-rolled to 2 mm sheets suitable for hot stamping application in an experimental rolling mill and a detailed study was made on the effect of various alloying elements on the microstructure and mechanical properties of these steels. A significantly higher impact toughness (42 J) could be achieved in the as-rolled and water-quenched Nb-Cr-B steel in comparison to Cr-B steel under similar processing condition. Microstructural refinement of martensite must be the reason for achieving high impact toughness. |
