A number of coals have been separated into their maceral components by density gradient centrifugation. Each maceral group exhibits a distribution of densities. In general, exinite distributions do not overlap with those of vitrinite. However, vitrinite density distributions overlap significantly with inertinite distributions. This behaviour places inherent limits on the ability to completely separate macerais using density measurements alone. The density distribution of vitrinites and probably exinites has been found to narrow as rank increases. |
