Water-soluble dyes are useful probes for the investigation of changes in solvent structure around large molecules. Their size bridges the gap between macromolecules and small ions, whose solvation has been studied extensively. Most of the bulk of a dye molecule is hydrophobic and capable of acting as a “structure-former” in water, although the orientation of water molecules in the hydration sphere may not be as uniform as might be expected for a hydrocarbon solute of similar bulk. Dyes offer a further advantage in having well-resolved absorption bands that are sensitive to changes in solvent polarity.1–3 |
