The article deals with the design arid construction of George Baker’s kinetic metal sculptures and with the aesthetic effects that he strives to produce. Design features for controlling the motion of components of the sculptures are presented, with particular emphasis on their application to sculpture of large size for indoor and outdoor installations. The design arid construction of a 50 ft kinetic sculpture entitled ‘Hanging Discus’, installed in the Malcolm A. Lowe Library at the California State University, San Diego, California, U.S.A., is described in detail. |
