Popis: | Summary A method is described whereby rabbit corneal epithelial cells were grown in tissue culture and infected with herpes simplex virus. A comparison was made between the histologic changes observed in the infected cells and the amount of infectious virus detectable in the tissue at different hours after infection. The developmental cycle of herpes virus in such tissue culture cells was found to be similar to that already described (5) in the chorioallantoic membrane of the embryonated egg. Histologic studies revealed that during the latent period, from 2–6 hours when infectivity was low, changes occurred in the nucleus which indicated a profound disturbance of structure. During the phase of increasing virus, between 6–12 hours, these structural changes became progressively differentiated into a fully formed inclusion body. |
