This chapter summarizes the archaeological data gathered from the Rio Lerma north to the 27°N parallel. The archaeological sequence is divided into Preclassic, Classic and Postclassic periods on the basis of ceramic types, architectural styles and settlement patterns. The chapter focuses on developments associated with ceramics, architecture and settlement patterns of the central portion of the northern frontier of Mesoamerica. Most of the Preclassic ceramic material that has been found in the central area of the northern frontier has been dated to the Terminal Preclassic. The distribution of Ctiupicuaro ceramics suggests that there was a cultural area at the end of the Preclassic that extended from the southern edge of the modern state of Zacatecas to just south of the Basin of Mexico. The Chupicuaro ceramic assemblage is defined by both forms and designs. The basic wares are black and brown wares, bichromes and polychromes. |
