This chapter gives an overview on the research on retraumatization. The understanding of retraumatization is inconclusive, partly due to the lack of a common definition. Trigger situations have not yet been consistently identified or defined and include trauma-associated stimuli as well as new traumatic events or threshold situations. There also is a lack of clarity about the duration of the symptom increase and the intensity of the increase in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms or eventually other comorbid symptomatology. The theory of the fear network is taken to explain the underlying mechanisms of the processing during retraumatization. Current empirical findings on retraumatization make it evident that there is a need for further research. Open aspects should be clarified in order to establish an operationally precise and universally used definition of retraumatization and to ensure adequate intervention and to avoid a vicious circle or traumatic memory in individuals with PTSD. |
