The application of sandwich structures in naval ships is briefly reviewed, with special focus on studies of their response to underwater explosion loadings. When the core material is a polymer foam offering relatively low stiffness in the thickness direction, the fluid–structure interaction is more complex than for conventional, plated ship structures. Studies performed in Norway in connection with the development of a series of mine countermeasure vessels around 1990 are described, as are parallel and later developments elsewhere. The implications for shock mitigation assessment are discussed. |
