The Introduction deals with the origins and evolution of prisons. To understand the study of prisons from a historical perspective, key developments in the history of prisons in modernity are discussed. This chapter helps to situate the study of Mesopotamian prisons in relation to the birth and development of prisons in the Western world. This helps to provide ideological context for understanding the historic relationship between prisons and concepts like punishment and correction. Further, it explains how imprisonment has been used for a variety of purposes, such as labor coercion, and demonstrates the importance of religious influence on the history of prisons. |
