Discourse analysis starts with Grillo’s blog and entries concerning the 2014 European elections. The investigation shifts to the Italian general election of 2018, comparing and contrasting the emotive rhetoric of populist politicians on social media, with a copy in major Italian newspapers—setting a pattern. In 2018, Italy’s place in Europe was hotly debated. The populist Euroscepticism of both Grillo’s Five Star Movement and Salvini’s League, was both articulated and challenged. These forces then combined in coalition government. In the 2019 European elections, Salvini, no longer in power, after the League were forced out, spearheaded Europe’s far-right challenge, holding a large rally, with Marie Le Pen and Geert Wilders attending. Salvini’s emotive rhetoric on social media is again compared and contrasted with newspaper coverage. |
